When the days get too dark,
And there are no silver linings,
Nor can I remember how it felt,
When sunlight danced on my skin,
When the sea that rages beneath my feet,
Is a perfect mirror of the bottomless pit,
That lives in me,
And I can no longer bear my limbs,
To learn how to swim.
I’ll try to remember,
The warmth-filled days,
Of my brother’s laughter,
Of my sister’s snide remarks,
Days when I was surrounded by familiarity,
I’ll try to remember,
The days in the sun,
My best friends’ antics with never-ending fun,
Days when I knew what it meant to belong.
I’ll try to remember,
The quiet nights,
The feeling of my cats’ fur beneath my fingers,
As they ask to be loved and I know nothing but to give love in return,
Nights when I knew serenity in simplicity,
I’ll try to remember,
Nights when everything synced,
Pieces clicked into place,
As we converse at the dining table,
With homemade meals warm in our bellies,
Nights when I wouldn’t trade this life for anything.
Whenever the four walls that bring me comfort,
Are the same ones that suffocate me,
I’ll remember that light lies beyond,
Always,
I’ll try to remember,
How the little moments of happiness,
Are always in reach.
