Realizing

She looks around at the bustling crowd as her arms hug herself, wondering why the people are so loud. Why are they so excited, pushing and pulling, rushing to get somewhere. Pretty baju kurung is on sale together with matching baju melayu. Their eager hands grab onto those that catch their eyes, smiles blooming on their faces as their wallets thin.

She simply can’t wrap her head around on why…? Why would they spend a whole lot of money on something temporary? Why would they be so happy to be surrounded by so many people that they only see once a year? Why would they put themselves through all that intrusive questioning by those nosy relatives?

But as the day comes by, she looks around the bustling crowd as one of her hands holds onto her drink and the other onto her small niece’s grabby fingers, maybe she doesn’t need to wonder anymore. Perhaps this day is not all about the overflowing amount of food or the overpriced baju raya. Perhaps this day is all about connecting with family, even the distant ones, the ones that she doesn’t even know the name of. Perhaps this day is all about fitting in, finding where she belongs.
